What makes it special

Onibus Coffee was one of the first wave of Tokyo specialty roasters to take single-origin pour-over seriously, and the Nakameguro location remains the best example of the company’s approach: a renovated wooden machiya squeezed up against the elevated Tokyu Toyoko line, with a tiny upstairs deck where you can sit at table height with passing trains.

The roastery is in Okusawa; this branch is the most accessible for visitors and the one most likely to catch you in cherry-blossom season, when the Naka-Meguro canal a few blocks away becomes one of the most-photographed stretches of water in Tokyo.

How to visit

The easiest approach is from Naka-Meguro station (Tokyu Toyoko Line, Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line). Exit the south exit, walk underneath the train tracks, and the wooden two-story machiya is immediately on your left.

If you’re coming on a weekend, expect a 15-30 minute queue between 11 AM and 3 PM. Weekday mornings (9-11 AM) are usually empty. The upstairs deck has limited seating — about six seats — and goes first.

Why we included it

Onibus is what most international visitors imagine when they search “Tokyo coffee” on Instagram: small, wooden, well-lit, with serious coffee. It’s also one of the few “famous” cafes that actually delivers on the hype. We’ve sent dozens of first-time visitors here without a single complaint about the coffee or the experience.

FAQ

Is it tourist-friendly?

Yes. English signage, English-speaking staff, and a photogenic interior make Onibus one of the easier specialty coffee stops for first-time visitors. Most travelers comfortable ordering at any cafe will have no friction here.

Do they take reservations?

No. Counter service only. Wait times of 15-30 minutes are common on weekends from 11 AM to 3 PM. Weekday mornings are quietest.

What should I order?

A single-origin pour-over (drip) is the house specialty — beans rotate seasonally and the staff can recommend a profile. Espresso, latte, and cold brew are all solid. Pastries are limited.

How do I get there from Naka-Meguro station?

Less than a minute. Exit Naka-Meguro JR/Tokyu station from the south exit, walk under the elevated train tracks, and the wooden machiya is on your immediate left. Look for the small wooden Onibus sign.
