Tokyo's deep bench of bars — speakeasy doors with no signage, neighborhood standing bars, late-night listening rooms. Curated by a longtime Asakusa local.

Bar New Dute
バーニューデューテ
A genuine hidden bar. The barrier to entry feels high, but the owner is genuinely friendly and never crowds you — a great sense of distance. The otoshi (cover snack) changes daily and is excellent. The owner's family also runs Enshūya, one of my favorite izakaya, in the same Sanya neighbourhood. Prices are gentle, and the music selection is the best around — if you're looking for fellow music nerds, go.
Bar New Dute is a tiny late-night bar in the Sanya district of Taito — the second act of Higashi-Asakusa's 'bar dute,' reopened by the same owner. It's on the 2nd floor of a small building on Nihonzutsumi 1-10-6, in the historic Irohakai shopping-street area. Open 19:00–5:00, closed Sundays, and walk-in friendly. Nearest stations are Minowa and Minami-Senju, about 10 minutes on foot.

FAQ
What makes Tokyo speakeasy bars different from regular bars?
Tokyo speakeasies often operate behind unmarked doors, inside other businesses, or with no street signage at all — the address is how you find them. Golden Gai in Shinjuku is the densest cluster: over 200 tiny bars packed into six alleys, each seating fewer than ten people.
Where are the best late-night bars in Tokyo for locals?
Shinjuku's Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho stay open past 3am. Standing bars (tachinomi) in Yurakucho under the tracks and Nakameguro along the canal draw local after-work crowds. Bar New Dute in Nihonzutsumi (relocated from Asakusa) is the only late-night bar currently featured on Tokyo Unseen.
Are Tokyo bars expensive, and do I need a reservation?
Standing bars and Golden Gai rooms run ¥500-1,500 per drink — walk-in is the norm. Whisky bars and craft cocktail counters in Ginza or Roppongi charge more and sometimes require reservations. Most small neighborhood bars expect cash and may add a cover charge (seating fee) of ¥500-1,000.
