Sangenjaya, Cozy

Setagaya counter culture I've been meaning to walk — a 1963 kissaten, a hidden 2F café until 1 AM, and a tuna-specialist izakaya one stop from Shibuya

Sangenjaya is on my list, not in my logbook yet — a 1963 Showa kissaten, a hidden 2F café open until 1 AM, and a 4.7★ tuna-specialist izakaya one stop from Shibuya keep showing up on my radar.

Sangenjaya is one of the wards I have not properly walked yet. It keeps coming up — friends mention the cream-soda kissaten on Sakae-dori, the second-floor café that stays open until 1 AM, the tuna counter in Ikejiri with the suspicious-in-a-good-way 4.7-star rating. The route is mapped in my head; I just have not closed the loop on it. That is the honest reason this guide is in the ✦ On the radar tier rather than the ✓ Visited one.

Kissaten Seven sits at the top of the list. Open since 1963, on Sakae-dori a two-minute walk from Sangenjaya Station South Exit B. The dining room mixes communal tables with vintage two-seater booths in green vinyl — 40 seats across one floor. The signature order is cream soda: a tall glass with vanilla ice cream floating in sweetened soda. 3.8★ from 318 Google Maps reviews. Cash only. The plan is a slow weekday afternoon, no agenda.

Moon Factory Coffee is the 隠れ家 (hideaway) I have walked past without going up. A second-floor room in 寺尾ビル, off the main drag in 2-chōme. Open most days from 1 PM until 1 AM, closed Thursdays. Eighteen seats, Wi-Fi, outlets, 4.1★ from 302 reviews. A quiet room with the street still running below sounds like exactly the kind of place I should already know.

Kotora in Ikejiri is the one I am closest to actually booking. Seven minutes on foot from Ikejiri-Ohashi (Den-en-toshi Line, one stop from Shibuya) — part of the residential Setagaya pocket between Shibuya and Sangenjaya. The kitchen breaks down whole bluefin tuna in-house: akami, chu-toro, and o-toro from the same fish, plus tuna-leek skewers and tuna-tail steak (¥1,290). 4.7★ from 296 reviews — rare territory for a Tokyo izakaya, which is the part that keeps pulling me back to the reservation page. Budget ¥5,000–6,000. Reservation required. Open until 4 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.

Shokudo Kado closes the route I have not yet walked. Two minutes from Sangenjaya Station, seasonal menu, walk-in friendly. 4.2★ from 325 reviews. Lunch Mon–Fri 11 AM–3 PM; dinner most days from 6 PM. On a busy night calling ahead is the standard advice. I am holding it as the dinner anchor for when I finally do this loop.

Notes

When I finally walk this route, the order is set: Kissaten Seven for afternoon coffee (South Exit B, 150 m, opens 11 AM) → Moon Factory Coffee into the late evening (4 minutes from the station, open until 1 AM most nights — closed Thursdays) → Shokudo Kado for dinner (2 minutes from the station, Mon–Fri from 6 PM). Kotora I keep as a separate trip: one Den-en-toshi stop back toward Shibuya, seven minutes from Ikejiri-Ohashi Station, reservation in hand, ideally on a Friday or Saturday when the kitchen stays open until 4 AM.
